Just after WW II a small Sicilian boy bonds with a film projectionist in a tiny little Italian town and becomes obsessed with movies and movie making. It follows his life, and of those around him, over the course of roughly 40 years. I can’t recommend this enough and actually watched the director’s cut (which is nearly three hours long) two nights in a row. It won the Best Foreign Film oscar in 1990. 4.7 starfish out of 5.

One of the 500 movies on my Netflix list (yes, I always keep 500 movies in my queue, and thanks to The Boy I have a little widget that randomizes the list so I never know what is going to arrive next) was the documentary called “Light Keeps Me Company”. It’s about cinematographer Sven Nykvist. I received it on July 7th but it sat on top of my DVD player for three months. That is until this past Wednesday night when I finally decided to give it a look. It was fair (2.4 starfish out of 5), but today I read that Sven died. Last Wednesday evening.

Watch and listen to Waaarrrren Zevon, just before he walked the plank, recording “Disorder In The House” with Cap'n Springsteen for his final album “It Be The Wind, Matey”. It’s my least favorite track from the CD but l now have a new found respect for it. I’m not sure, but I think this was one of the songs recorded at Zevon’s in-house studio because he was too sick to travel.
