I can’t tell you how much I loved this documentary. It follows the top puzzlers and puzzle makers as they compete in the annual American crossword puzzle tournament, with side trips with famous obsessive solvers like Bill Clinton, Ken Burns and Jon Stewart. It’s very short (90 minutes), but I highly recommend it. 4.9 starfish out of 5.

Movie Rating: The World According To Garp
It’s been 20 years since I’ve seen this film, based on the book by John Irving, one of my favorite writers. I was kind of surprised that it was directed by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy..., The Sting). I wasn’t expecting to see his name attached to this. 4.4 starfish out of 5.

The Boy and I tried out our first rifftrax experience and if you are a fan of MST3K, you’ll like this clever new gimmick made by the same guys. You download the trax from their site for around three bucks. We got the one for The Matrix. Then you upload it onto your iPod (it’s audio only) and synchronize it with your DVD of the movie and play the iPod audio through your stereo while the movie plays on the screen. Sounds complicated, but Graham cued the whole thing up in about five minutes. Here's a sample. And another.

This post by Scott Adams got me thinking about my grandfather, who died in the late 80’s. When I was a kid we’d see him a couple of times a year and he would always have a stack of National Geographic magazines for me. I think I inherited his habit of reading every one cover to cover, whether the article interested us or not. It made me sad to think he missed out on this whole internet thing. He would have absolutely loved this technology stuff.
