Animal of the week: The grasshopper mouse, which eats scorpions, evicts other species from their burrows so they don’t have to dig one themselves, and howls at the moon. Scientists are now studying the nervous system to try to explain why it is immune to pain. You can listen to one howling here.
Pet corner: Meet 10-year-old Evan, who donates everything he can to help cats.
I've never had any kind of surgery before, so I'm a bit nervous. Ok, a lot nervous since I've never been put under either. Tomorrow my foot goes under the knife.
It's now Thursday morning, so maybe a bit late - general surgery is a piece of cake. You're awake, then you're out cold, then you're awake again. Simple as that. I suspect the post-surgery crutches will be the worst part. Crutches really suck.

Ken. You nailed it across the board.

What I learned from my surgery:
You need to eat lots of protein to help your body knit itself back together -- half a gram of protein for every pound you weigh (if you weigh 100 lbs, eat 50 grams of protein a day); and rub Vitamin E oil on your scar to help it heal and fade.

Someone else had the same thought. Mom just brought over meatloaf, falafel, beef stew and a big box of pistachios. And Ken's right: Crutches suck.

I hope you heal as fast as possible!
We are lucky we live in an age when these things can be fixed, says the person who would have died if they didn't remove her appendix.
Good luck on your recovery.
