I've heard these called "sun pillars". Like sun dogs and similar phenomena they're caused by light reflecting off hexagonal ice crystals.

sun pillar or sun column. I've seen them called both.


it can be really satisfying to bark back at a truly idiotic customer, especially when one deliberately breaks something after using it, then asks for full refund... one case got truly entertaining when this 30-something gal called in her parents to the argument and then the BBB and only ended when I asked her county atty and the post office to investigate her for attempted fraud.
