Biomes made it onto the February cover in of Southern Rhode Island's monthly magazine for their edition focusing on family fun things to do this winter. Here are some kids petting my sharks from the cover of this month's issue.
Listen to some astronauts describing the “overview effect”, which is how a person’s worldview of the planet changes after seeing it for themselves from space. The Daily Overview does its best to show those of us who are earthbound this phenomenon by posting a new satellite image each day.
When I started my expansion of the Biomes Center three years ago, I approached the state's quasi-governmental Economic Development Corporation to help out with financing. The EDC's main mission is to encourage job growth in RI. They helped me out, but the funds were a pittance and I had to jump through hoops for a ridiculously small grant. Meanwhile they doled out $75 million to Curt Shilling's now bankrupt 38 Studios. I've hired six employees since then and Curt and the then Republican Governor screwed the taxpayers of my state. The NYT has a good article on the entire debacle that is worth a read. For what the state threw away on a single startup that went nowhere they could have funded over a hundred small businesses like mine and would have created hundreds, or even thousands, of new jobs.
