I also think it's pi, but I know why Pablo thought it was Hebrew. It looks a little like a mirror image of the word Chai in Hebrew -- the two letters chet and yod, which mean "life," as in the toast, L'chaim! (to life!). This word is also sometimes used as a good luck symbol -- some people wear a gold version of it on a chain.
